William Proctor Jordan
William Proctor Jordan, son of Howard and Julia Jordan, was born in Savannah, Georgia, on March 23, 1918. He received his early education in the public schools of Beaufort, South Carolina, and later attended Robert Smalls High School, from which he graduated in 1935. He continued his studies at Georgia State College (now Savannah State University), earning the Bachelor of Science degree in 1939.
After graduating, Mr. Jordan taught in the Georgia public school system for one year before entering the business field as an agent with the North Carolina Mutual Insurance Company. He remained in that position until 1941, when he was drafted into the United States Army.
Mr. Jordan completed his basic training at Camp Lee in Virginia and subsequently attended Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia. In 1943, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry. He served with the 366th Infantry Regiment at Fort Devens, Massachusetts, and later participated in combat operations in North Africa and Italy. Lieutenant Jordan was killed in action on Alaska Hill in Italy on New Year’s Eve, 1944.
He married Katherine Haven of Savannah. The couple had no children. Lieutenant Jordan is survived by his brother, Howard Jordan Jr., Vice Chancellor for Services, University System of Georgia, Atlanta, Georgia.
HOW AMERICAN LEGION POST 500 GOT ITS START
The American Legion 500 was established in the year 1946 by Thomas J. Hopkins. District 500 first started in conjunction with District 136, until the district-Aide Commander John C. Hudson organized separate Districts. Thomas J. Hopkins was the next District Commander and a delegate to the National Convention in Miami, Florida. The temporary charter was issued August 21, 1946.
The first charter members were: Thomas J. Hopkins and /Robert B. Howard. E.M. Campbell, Charles W. Gardner, Vernon L. Rhaney, Archie R. C. Wiley, Dan Davis, James Benson Pinkney, Willian B. Solomon, Arthur Dwight, Eulie W. Bellinger, Paul J. Steele, William Lovett Jr., and Hercules W. Leake.
The American Legion Post 500 received its local charter in 1946.
American Legion Post 500 was chartered in 1946 and is the first African American Legion Post in Georgia. American Legion Post has been welcoming VETERANS from all branches of our Armed Forces.
